UK Braces for Snow and Rain as Met Office Extends Yellow Weather Warnings

UK Braces for Snow and Rain as Met Office Extends Yellow Weather Warnings

Forecasters warn of widespread snow, sleet and heavy rain across large swaths of the country with travel and flood risks
A series of yellow weather warnings from the UK’s national weather service signal the arrival of significant wintry conditions and rainfall across much of Britain this weekend and into the coming days.

The alerts, issued for snow, ice and rain, reflect an Arctic air mass pushing unusually cold conditions southwards and intersecting with bands of heavier precipitation.

The current warnings cover large parts of Scotland, northern England and eastern England, with additional alerts in some midlands and southern areas into Sunday afternoon.

Forecasters have indicated that snow is likely to fall initially on higher ground before moving to lower levels, with accumulations varying by elevation.

In parts of eastern England such as the Lincolnshire Wolds and sections of Norfolk and Suffolk, snow could turn heavier at times, with slushy accumulations of a centimetre or more possible during the afternoon, before changing back to rain later in the day.

The extended snow and ice warnings remaining in force into Sunday morning have also prompted concerns over disrupted travel across major road and rail networks.

The wintry weather follows persistent rainfall across parts of the United Kingdom, and flood alerts and warnings remain active in scores of areas.

Environment officials report that while tens of thousands of homes and businesses have been protected through flood defences, several hundred properties have already suffered flooding in recent days.

The convergence of heavy rain and saturated ground has raised the prospect of further localised flooding as the wet weather continues to move across England and Wales.

Temperatures will be markedly below seasonal norms as the Arctic blast persists, and surface conditions on roads, pavements and rural routes are expected to become hazardous due to ice following periods of sleet and snowfall.

Meteorologists have urged residents and motorists to stay abreast of local warnings and forecast updates, as the severity and timing of wintry showers and rainfall can shift rapidly.

The broader unsettled pattern is forecast to continue into the next week, bringing a further mix of rain, sleet and cold conditions in many regions.
