Britain is deploying military equipment and personnel to Belgium in response to a recent surge of drone activity that disrupted air traffic at major airports and military bases.

The head of Britain’s armed forces, Air Chief Marshal Richard Knighton, confirmed that a request from Belgian authorities prompted the deployment of British kit and personnel to assist in counter-drone operations.

In the last week, Brussels Airport and Liège Airport were both forced to suspend operations following sightings of unidentified drones near airfields and a military base believed to host U.S. nuclear weapons.

Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken described the activity as beyond amateur capability and suggested it constituted a “spying operation”.

While Belgium retains responsibility for identifying the source of the drones, Knighton noted that British support is already on the ground and that the move signals solidarity among North Atlantic Treaty Organization allies in the face of hybrid security threats.

Britain’s Defense Secretary John Healey said the deployment underscores the importance of coalition action to secure Europe’s infrastructure and airspace.

Though the origins of the drone incursions remain unconfirmed, Belgium and its allies have pointed to a pattern of aerial disruption across Europe, drawing comparisons with hybrid tactics previously attributed to Russia.

The coordination of support from the United Kingdom reflects both heightened concern over unexplained drone sightings and the growing emphasis on multilayered air-defence against unmanned aerial systems.

Belgian officials have announced a national security review, with plans to expand its drone-detection infrastructure and establish a dedicated air-security centre by early 2026. The British contribution is expected to reinforce Belgium’s immediate response capabilities while longer-term measures are implemented.
