UK Reaffirms Call for Peaceful, Democratic Transition in Venezuela at UN Security Council
London urges a safe and legitimate change of government reflecting the Venezuelan people’s will amid escalating regional tensions
The United Kingdom delivered a formal statement at the United Nations Security Council emphasising its support for a peaceful and democratic transition of power in Venezuela that genuinely reflects the will of the Venezuelan people.
Speaking at the council meeting, Britain’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN highlighted longstanding concerns over the credibility of Venezuela’s political process, noting that the National Electoral Council had still not published comprehensive results from the July 2024 presidential election after more than eighteen months.
This absence of transparency, the UK said, had contributed to deepening doubts about the legitimacy of Nicolás Maduro’s government and the erosion of fundamental freedoms.
In its address, the UK reiterated its solidarity with Venezuelans who continue to face severe political and economic hardship, including widespread poverty, repression and deteriorating basic services that have fuelled a displacement crisis affecting the wider Latin American region.
London emphasised that the voices of all Venezuelans must be heard and that any legitimate government should reflect the outcome of a credible electoral process conducted in a free, fair and transparent manner.
The statement also reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to upholding the principles of the United Nations Charter and international law as essential foundations for global peace, security and the rule of law.
Britain’s position aligns with broader international calls for a negotiated and peaceful transition in Venezuela, with diplomatic efforts ongoing to support democratic reform and respect for human rights.
The UK maintained that regional cooperation with partners across Latin America and beyond will be crucial in addressing challenges such as organised crime and drug trafficking, which undermine stability and democratic norms.
The Security Council discussion came amid heightened geopolitical tensions following recent developments in Venezuela, and the UK’s intervention underscored its ongoing engagement in efforts to facilitate constructive dialogue and a legitimate political pathway for the country’s future.
