Four members of the Hinduja family, the UK's richest, were sentenced to prison by a Swiss court for exploiting workers from India at their Geneva villa. The workers said they were paid as little as one dollar per day for 18-hour shifts. The family is appealing the ruling, asserting the employees received ample benefits.
Four members of the UK's richest family, the Hindujas, have been convicted of exploiting staff brought from India to work at their villa in Geneva.
Prakash and Kamal Hinduja, their son Ajay, and his wife Namrata were sentenced by a Swiss court to prison terms ranging from four to four-and-a-half years for exploitation and illegal employment.
They were acquitted of human trafficking charges.
The workers alleged they were paid as little as one dollar per day for 18-hour workdays and passport confiscation.
The Hinduja family is appealing the ruling.
The trial highlighted the family's estimated fortune of £37bn and claims of lavish spending on pets over human employees.
The elder Hindujas did not attend the trial due to ill health.
