The US Virgin Islands (USVI) will receive $27 million from the US Department of Commerce's National Telecommunications & Information Administration (NTIA) to improve internet infrastructure and provide affordable, reliable, high-speed internet service to homes and small businesses lacking access.
This initiative is part of President
Joe Biden's "Investing in America" agenda.
Meanwhile, BVIslanders are frustrated with the unreliable internet service provided by local telecoms providers, which was challenged after the 2017 hurricanes.
The USVI has received more financial support from the US than the UK has from the UK government, leading to public criticism.
The BVI Premier has stated that he will borrow funds to upgrade the territory's infrastructure, but will do so responsibly.
