VI celebrates 2020 Olympians with massive motorcade

Hundreds of vehicles stretched along the roadways throughout the territory of the Virgin Islands (VI) celebrating the accomplishments of four Olympians who participated in the Senior and Junior Olympics this year- Kyron A. McMaster, Chantel E. Malone, Elinah Phillp and Adaejah Hodge.

The celebration took the form of a massive motorcade simultaneously on the islands of Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada and Jost van Dyke on August 3, 2021.

The event, which was broadcast live on the Facebook page of the Government of the Virgin Islands and JTV Channel 55, saw a mammoth turnout, with Tortola being the largest due to it being the most populated island of the Virgin Islands.

The Tortola leg was led by Premier and Minister of Finance Honourable Andrew A. Fahie (R1), starting at Festival Grounds in Road Town the motorcade. It proceeded west, with many joining the already long line of vehicles along the way.

The celebration took the form of a massive motorcade simultaneously on the islands of Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada and Jost Van Dyke on August 3, 2021.

Motorcade traversed territory

They motorcade went through West End, into Cane Garden Bay, through “Country”, into East End and back to the starting point.

Many persons lined the streets while some remained on their porches, waving the flag of the VI as a show of appreciation for the Olympians.

The motorcade ended shortly after 8:00 pm, an hour outside the curfew; however, Premier Fahie has said permission was sought and granted, given the significance of the celebration.

According to the Premier, more celebrations are in line when the athletes return to the territory.

Swimmer Elinah Phillip (left) placed second in her heat but did not advance. She was 38th overall and the fastest swimmer from the Caribbean for the Women's 50m Freestyle. Kyron A. McMaster (Centre) finished 4th in the 400m Hurdles Final, which is being dubbed as the greatest Olympic race in history and Chantel E. Malone reached the final of the Women's Long Jump where she placed 12th.

Virgin Islands young athletic phenom Adaejah Hodge won triple gold at the US Track and Field (USTAF) Junior Olympics held at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, USA from July 26 to August 1, 2021.
