Government of Virgin Islands Hosts Training Workshop to Address Sargassum Seaweed Invasion

The Government of the Virgin Islands is seeking ways to manage the threat of sargassum seaweed, which has been causing negative impacts on the region's coastal and marine ecosystems.
A two-day training of trainer's workshop for stakeholders was recently conducted to build capacity for sustainable management of sargassum.

The training aimed to increase understanding on the science of sargassum, the principles of adaptive management, and the selection of tools and approaches for monitoring, clean-up, and rehabilitation of affected areas.

Multiple organizations including the BVI Tourist Board, National Parks Trust of the Virgin Islands, Unite BVI, and the BVI Ports Authority participated in the training.

The issue of sargassum is a shared concern among the Caribbean, the United States, and Mexico, and solutions are being explored to mitigate the "new norm." The removal of sargassum is not a cheap venture, and alternative solutions are being sought.

The Deputy Secretary in the Ministry with responsibility for Natural Resources, Mr Mervin D.

Hastings, stated that it is their job to find a solution through effectively engaging stakeholders and securing their participation.

Sargassum influxes have been affecting the Caribbean region since 2011, causing increasingly negative ecological and socio-economic impacts.
