Virgin Gorda’s crosstown rivals Avengers, VG United play to 3-3 draw

Virgin Gorda’s crosstown rivals Avengers, VG United play to 3-3 draw

A ferocious battle between Virgin Gorda crosstown rivals Avengers and VG United at Cedar School on Saturday, ended their Women’s Fustal Match in a 3-3 draw, where VG United was seeking to claim outright bragging rights, after beating the Avengers, 2-1 in their first encounter.

The seesaw tussle saw Avengers goals coming from Keithrece Smith, Kelaine Smith and Ebony Fahie, for a 3-2 edge after VG United’s Kezia Gumbs scored twice. Standing inside her box after an Avengers attempt at goal, VG United goalie Kimberly Smith kicked a left footer that tied the game 3-3, as no team capitalized on its other opportunities in the waning moments of the game.

“This game today was very physical and the Avengers, they played very well,” VG United Coach Thomas “Manly” Albert told Island Sun Sports. “They got chances but I believe we got more chances and did not score our goals but it was a fair game, I loved the game. Both teams wanted to win but the 3-3 result is good for me. We were leading then Avengers took the lead and we came back and equalized, but I believe my team could have done better. I saw the Avengers were very tired but we did not capitalize on them.”

Kimberly Smith said she had no idea her equalizing score was going in the goal.

“I was trying to do it before but didn’t get the ball in time,” Smith—a sprinter and Long Jumper who’s planning on taking up the Javelin Throw—told Island Sun Sports. “When I saw that one coming, I thought it was a good opportunity. I took the shot and it went in. I was a nice curl off my left food and I did great. I saved the day.”

Avengers Captain Ebony Fahie, said it was a very good game and they didn’t defend well allowing Kimberly Smith to score the equalizer. She said that it was a very good goal.

“That was the best goal I saw for the entire game but we didn’t go to our positions as quickly as possible,” Fahie noted. Other than that, it was a good competitive game between both of us.”

Islanders regain President’s Cup

Two second half goals by Rohan “Chii Chi” Lennon following a 0-0 halftime tie, led Islanders to the President’s Cup trophy on Sunday, with their 2-0 victory over nemesis and No 3 seeded Virgin Gorda Sugar Boys. The President’s Cup was added to their eight BVI Football Association league title they won last month.

The Sugar Boys beat Islanders for the cup with a 1-0 victory in 2017. In 2018, the Sugar Boys used a 5-1 victory to knock the Islanders out of the Big Four, before going on to beat Wolues 5-2 in the Final

National Youth League

Devin Jones scored four times, with other goals coming from Austin Prentice, Howard Watson and Ikyjah Williams, as the Rebels walked off with a 7-0 victory over One Love, in their U17 match. In the U13 division, Virgin Gorda United stopped Jost Van Dyke’s Old Madrid, 7-1. The Wolues stayed unbeaten with a 5-2 victory over One Caribbean.
