White cops killing black men ‘every other week’ - Skelton-Cline

The killing of 20-year-old African American, Daunte Wright in Minneapolis on April 11, 2021, was described by police as accidental; however, the death has since sparked unrest.

During a traffic stop, a white police officer may have intended to fire a Taser, instead, she fired a gun which resulted in the young man dying of the single gunshot wound.

Protests sparked in Minneapolis

Since then, the Minneapolis Police Department has released bodycam footage which has rocked the Minneapolis suburb miles from where George P. Floyd Jr was killed during a police arrest in May 2020 and sparked widespread protests and police resignations.

In the Virgin Islands (VI); however, Honestly Speaking radio moderator, Mr Claude O. Skelton-Cline, on the Tuesday, April 13, 2021, edition of his Honestly Speaking show, called on Virgin Islanders to take notice of the crimes against blacks in other countries and to speak out against injustices regardless of where it happens.

“It doesn't matter your ethnic background, your skin colour, when we see what's taking place in the United States of America… we have to think and look more closely and commit to doing something as individuals and as a people, as it relates to how is it every other day, every other week… some black man's life, in particular, is being taken at the hands of white police officers,” he said.

White supremacy fueling crimes - Skelton-Cline

Skelton-Cline said in the US there is a system of white supremacy that allows police to carry out certain acts while being empowered by the state.

He urged Virgin Islanders to not be afraid to speak on certain matters since injustices can affect everyone regardless of where it happens.

“It was Martin Luther King who said injustice anywhere, is a threat to justice everywhere and the reason why I'm bringing it before the ears and the eyes of the people of these Virgin Islands is because you and I are impacted,” he said.

“You and I have to see, have to make some commitment, must raise our level of protest about what's taking place in the US,” Skelton-Cline said.
