WHO chief welcomes US "historic decision" to support the release of patents for anticovid vaccines

The head of the WHO has been advocating for months for this measure, which India and South Africa proposed to the World Trade Organization.

The director general of the World Health Organization ( WHO ), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, welcomed on Wednesday the "historic decision" of the United States to support a temporary lifting of the patents of anticovid vaccines to accelerate their production and distribution in the world.

"I congratulate the United States on this historic decision," tweeted Tedros, who called for moving forward "all together quickly, in solidarity, to harness the ingenuity and commitment of the scientists who produced the life-saving covid-19 vaccines."
