‘You cannot take a 3-term incumbent lightly’- Walwyn

‘You cannot take a 3-term incumbent lightly’- Walwyn

After being rejected as an At Large candidate in the 2019 General Election, National Democratic Party (NDP) Member and former Minister for Education Mr Myron V. Walwyn is now trying to get back into the House of Assembly (HoA) via a district seat.

Virgin Islands News Online (VINO) was the first to report that Mr Walwyn was eying the Sixth District seat and our accurate story was confirmed on Friday, March 3, 2023, when the NDP announced Mr Walwyn as its Sixth District candidate.

The Sixth District is currently represented by Hon Alvera Maduro-Caines, formerly of the NDP, but now a part of the Virgin Islands Party (VIP).

Mr Walwyn claimed he decided to run in the Sixth District in the 2023 General Election because “a group” of people came to him asking for his representation and noted that he is closely connected to the district since his “navel string” is buried under a tree in Free Bottom.

The controversial politician also claimed that persons in the district told him they do not feel as if they have effective representation in the HoA.

Only 1 chance to win in district- Walwyn

According to Mr Walwyn, some persons feel he is trying to find an easy way to enter the House of Assembly.

"When you run At Large you have four chances to win. You can come first, second, third, or fourth, there are four chances to win. When you run in a district you have one chance to win, nobody can come second place, so it says that running in a district perhaps could be more difficult than if it's running At Large."

Additionally, Mr Walwyn acknowledged that he will be running against someone who is a three-term incumbent.

"You cannot take a three-term incumbent lightly. I am running in District Six at this point in my life, at this time, that is where my passion is and I want to lend my passion, my talent, my skills to an area that I know have been good to me and has raised me and I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that I can uplift it for the people and provide the quality of representation that I know I will be running for."

Mr Walwyn, who was criticised as being very controversial, vindictive, and divisive, as an elected official, served consecutive terms as At Large Representative (2011-2015, 2015-2019) before losing his seat when he led the NDP into the 2019 General Election but suffered a heavy defeat to the VIP.
