British Man Charged with Aiding Russian Intelligence
Howard Michael Phillips, a 64-year-old from Harlow, Essex, has been charged with assisting Russia’s intelligence service. Arrested by UK counter-terrorism police, Phillips appeared in Westminster Magistrates Court and is scheduled to appear at the Old Bailey on 14 June. Searches were conducted in Hertfordshire and Essex, with no wider public threat identified.
A 64-year-old British man, Howard Michael Phillips from Harlow, Essex, has been charged with assisting Russia’s intelligence service.
Phillips was arrested by UK counter-terrorism police in central London on 16 May and charged a week later under section 3 of the National Security Act.
He appeared at Westminster Magistrates Court, where he confirmed his address and date of birth.
Prosecutor Mark Luckett revealed that Phillips had contact with a person he believed to be representing foreign powers and held sensitive information regarding a Member of Parliament.
Judge Daniel Sternberg denied him bail, and Phillips is scheduled to appear at the Old Bailey on 14 June.
Searches were conducted at addresses in Hertfordshire and Essex as part of the investigation, but no threat to the wider public is believed to exist in connection with this case.
