BVI turns to UK for ‘suitably-equipped ship’ to quarantine potential COVID-19 cases

BVI turns to UK for ‘suitably-equipped ship’ to quarantine potential COVID-19 cases

Premier Andrew Fahie said his administration has reached out to the United Kingdom for support to quarantine any novel coronavirus cases that may reach the territory.

While the British Virgin Islands has not had a confirmed case of the virus to date, the Premier said: “I have written to the Governor requesting the support of the UK Government for the provision of a suitably-equipped ship for the purpose of quarantining of persons in the event that we need to do so.”

He continued: “I have also asked for the UK’s support in setting up temporary quarantine facilities on land, among other resources, if needed.”

Safety first

The Premier said his administration is taking these precautionary measures “because the safety and health of our people come first”.

“We are also urging you to exercise safe practices such as frequent hand-washing with soap for at least 20 seconds, avoid touching your face, cover your mouth when you cough, and keep your immune system strong by taking the necessary vitamins,” Fahie stated.

He continued: “Should you develop the symptoms such as coughing and shortness of breath, do not visit the doctor. Instead, call the medical hotline at 852-7650. This is important to ensure that you get the appropriate treatment and to protect those around you, such as your family members. Vigilance is very important.”

In the meantime, Premier said there is no ‘benefit’ which can come from panicking or what he describes as panic buying.

“The way to get through this is by being level-headed, informed, and calm. The measures mentioned above will ensure that all aspects of this challenge can and will be handled in an orderly fashion,” he surmised.
