Celebrated JvD musician Reuben A. Chinnery found dead @ home

Renowned and celebrated Jost van Dyke musician Mr. Reuben A. Chinnery has been found dead at his home on the island this morning, Saturday, September 4, 2021.

The death has been confirmed to Virgin Islands News Online (VINO) by multiple sources who indicated that Mr Chinnery lived alone and was discovered dead in the small wooden shack where he resided.

Sources told VINO that the Police this morning visited the island and removed the body where it was transported to Tortola.

Long time Jost van Dyke resident Gregory A. Callwood speaking to VINO said Chinnery defined the island’s musical sound and had a huge following at the popular Foxy’s Bar where he performed going as far back as the ’70s.

Talented 12 string classical guitarist

Mr Chinnery, regarded as a talented 12 string classical guitarist with a rich baritone voice was celebrated as one of Jost van Dyke's top musicians and one of the best musicians in the VI.

Long time Jost van Dyke resident Gregory A. Callwood speaking to VINO said Chinnery defined the island’s musical sound and had a huge following at the popular Foxy’s Bar where he performed going as far back as the '70s.

“Reuben Chinnery is by no comparison the greatest and the best musician that Jost van Dyke has ever and will ever see, he captivated everything that happened in JvD in the late '70s to '90s and configurated it in a song,” Callwood told VINO.

Chinnery also entertained crowds at other spots including the One Love Bar, Soggy Dollar, and Ivan’s.

Never forget his legacy –Mr Callwood

‘We should never forget Reuben and his legacy should also be pushed up and never forgotten…” Callwood went on to say.

Mr Callwood said, however, one unfortunate thing was that his friend never believed in iTunes or the digital era and as such, his music would not be widely accessible, but copies of his albums are still around.

Some of Reuben’s original and popular songs include “Come back to the islands”, “Sailing in the BVI” and “To The Islands.”
