Elderly Climate Protester Released After Electronic Tagging Issue Resolved
Seventy-eight-year-old Gaie Delap, initially recalled to prison due to electronic monitoring challenges, has been re-released under Home Detention Curfew.
Gaie Delap, a seventy-eight-year-old environmental activist from Montpelier, Bristol, has been released from Eastwood Park prison on Home Detention Curfew (HDC) after authorities resolved issues related to her electronic monitoring.
Delap was serving a 20-month sentence for her involvement in a November 2022 Just Stop Oil protest that obstructed the M25 motorway.
She was initially released in November 2024 to serve the remainder of her sentence under HDC but was recalled to prison when suitable electronic monitoring equipment could not be fitted due to her medical condition, deep-vein thrombosis, which prevented the use of a standard ankle bracelet.
The Ministry of Justice confirmed that Delap was released on 31 January 2025 after a compatible electronic tag was found.
Her brother, Mick Delap, expressed gratitude for the support received and highlighted concerns about other prisoners facing similar issues.
Legal interventions by her solicitor, Raj Chada, and the Good Law Project were instrumental in securing her release.
The Good Law Project criticized the disproportionate policing of climate protesters and is considering action against the Ministry of Justice and Serco for potential equality law breaches.
Delap's Home Detention Curfew is scheduled to conclude on 7 April 2025.
