Heavy Rain and Gale-Force Winds to Batter the UK Through Weekend
Storm system brings gusts up to 70 mph and persistent showers, with travel disruption likely across the country.
A powerful weather system is set to bring heavy rainfall and gale-force winds to large parts of the United Kingdom from Thursday afternoon and into the weekend.
The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for wind in Northern Ireland from 1 pm to 11 pm on Thursday, while forecasters warn of possible travel disruption in the North West where gusts could reach up to 70 mph.
The conditions follow a wet Wednesday in southeast England, as meteorologists say an accelerating jet stream is steering low-pressure systems across the region.
Mist and fog may develop early on Thursday before heavy rain moves in, particularly across Northern Ireland and the Irish Sea corridor.
Gales are expected on Thursday afternoon, with parts of the North West experiencing 60 to 70 mph winds.
Other regions may face gusts of up to 50 mph, bringing a wind-chill effect despite daytime highs of around 15 °C.
Rain and squally showers will continue into Friday and the start of the weekend, with some hail also possible.
The Met Office noted there are no clear signs of the unsettled weather letting up, as further low-pressure systems may follow.
Travel, especially in exposed areas and across the Irish Sea, may be affected by strong winds and heavy downpours.
Drivers are advised to exercise caution, particularly on exposed roads and bridges.
Residents in the affected zones are urged to secure loose items outdoors and stay aware of local weather updates.
