High-Profile Broodmare Puca Sells for Five Million Dollars at Fasig-Tipton ‘Night of the Stars’
UK-based Ace Stud acquires Kentucky Broodmare of the Year to support stallions Raging Torrent and Carl Spackler
In a standout moment at Fasig-Tipton’s “Night of the Stars” sale on November 3, the dam of three Grade 1 winners, Puca, fetched a winning bid of five million dollars.
The ticket was signed by the United Kingdom-based Ace Stud via the Raging Torrent Syndicate, led by bloodstock manager Paul Curran.
Puca, originally named 2024 Kentucky Broodmare of the Year, produced the Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Mage, Belmont Stakes (G1) and Haskell Stakes (G1) winner Dornoch, and Pennsylvania Derby (G1) winner Baeza.
The mare was consigned as Hip 135 by ELiTE-Agent and had been widely cited in advance commentary as the first reigning Broodmare of the Year to go under the hammer in 17 years.
Curran said the mare will stay in the United States initially while Ace Stud considers future matings with its stallions Raging Torrent and Carl Spackler, both standing at Lane’s End Farm in Kentucky.
“We’re thrilled,” he said.
“We just picked up probably one of the best broodmares in the U.S. at the moment… really, really special.” He also indicated that the five-million-dollar price came in under his own expectations.
Ace Stud also purchased Violent Wave, a daughter of Violence in foal to the leading sire Into Mischief, for 1.5 million dollars (Hip 173 by Hill ’n’ Dale) and added broodmare prospect Mylinda’s Grey for 575,000 dollars (Hip 124 by Hartwell Farm).
The purchases reflect the stable’s aggressive investment in quality mares to complement its stallion roster.
Puca’s sale marks a significant moment in the bloodstock market, underscoring the premium placed on mares with proven Classic-producing records.
The investment by a UK-based entity in acquiring one of America’s premier broodmares also illustrates the increasingly global nature of thoroughbred breeding and the shifting dynamics of elite mating programmes.
