Incarcerated Putin Critic Uses Humor to Describe Harsh Prison Climate

Alexei Navalny, a 47-year-old prominent Russian opposition figure, has been located in the harsh IK-3 penal colony near the Arctic Circle.
His allies detected his transfer to this remote facility in Kharp, in the Yamal-Nenets region, 1,900 km from Moscow, on December 25.

Following his move to the notorious detention center, known as "Polar Wolf," right before the holiday season, Navalny used irony to comment on the frigid conditions he faces, according to his Telegram post. Upon completion of quarantine, he was put into a disciplinary cell due to his demeanor.

Navalny's sarcastic remarks highlighted the facility's extreme cold, not dropping below -32 degrees Celsius, mockingly suggesting that brisk morning walks in these conditions could be rejuvenating if one managed to replace frostbitten body parts.

Accompanying his comments, he shared a photo of the small, barred concrete yard he walks in, measuring only 11 by 3 steps.

Using dark humor, he drew a comparison with a scene from the film "The Revenant," quipping that a dead horse wouldn't last 15 minutes there; instead, a "hot, fried elephant" might be more fitting.

The Polar Wolf colony is among Russia's strictest prisons, usually housing inmates convicted of serious offenses. With the upcoming week expecting plunging temperatures of around minus 28 Celsius, it highlights the brutal winters the prisoners endure.

Located 60 km from the Arctic Circle and established in the 1960s, "Polar Wolf" was originally part of the Soviet GULAG forced labor camp system, reports the Moskovsky Komsomolets newspaper.
