Israeli Hostage's Body Returned Amid Ceasefire Agreement with Hamas
The family of Oded Lifshitz confirms his death as part of ongoing prisoner exchanges in the Israel-Hamas conflict.
The family of Oded Lifshitz, an 84-year-old Israeli citizen, has announced the identification of his body among four others returned to Israel by Hamas.
This development occurred on February 20, 2025, as part of a ceasefire agreement involving a complex prisoner exchange process that has been ongoing since the conflict escalated on October 7, 2023.
Oded Lifshitz was abducted from Kibbutz Nir Oz during the initial Hamas attack, which resulted in numerous kidnappings and hostages being taken into Gaza.
His family had not received any information on his status until the recent confirmation of his death.
In a statement released by the family through the Hostages and Missing Families Forum Headquarters, they expressed their deep sorrow at the news, describing the end of a 503-day period filled with uncertainty.
The statement read: "We had hoped and prayed for a different outcome.
Now we can mourn the husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who has been missing from us since October 7."
Oded Lifshitz was a retired journalist and a great-grandfather, leaving behind a significant family legacy.
While his wife, Yocheved Lifshitz, 86, was also taken hostage, she was released two weeks later.
The return of Oded’s body has been met with profound sadness from his family, particularly from his daughter Dr. Sharone Lifschitz, who resides in Walthamstow, London.
Dr. Lifschitz's lawyer, Adam Wagner, characterized the day as one marked by immense sadness and failure, noting that three other bodies returned include those of Shiri Bibas and her two children, Ariel and Kfir.
Wagner remarked on the collective horror felt regarding the circumstances of their deaths.
Stella Creasy, the Member of Parliament for Walthamstow, expressed her heartbreak over the news via a social media post, highlighting Oded Lifshitz's dedication to peace initiatives between Israelis and Palestinians.
She noted, "A man who dedicated his life to fighting for peace...
The news today is a devastating blow."
This incident reflects the ongoing humanitarian crisis and the emotional toll experienced by the families of hostages caught in the protracted conflict.
The families continue to navigate their grief while advocating for the safe return of all hostages from the region.
Recent releases have included other hostages, such as Eli Sharabi, although reports indicate he appeared frail and affected by his captivity.
