Mashallah Karami, the father of a protester executed in Iran, has been sentenced to six years in prison for illegally organizing gatherings and collecting donations. His son, Mohammad Mehdi Karami, was executed in January 2023 after protests following Mahsa Amini's death. Rights groups are calling for the international community to address ongoing abuses in Iran.
Iranian authorities have sentenced Mashallah Karami, the father of a 22-year-old protester executed in connection with the 2022 protests, to six years in prison.
A Revolutionary Court in Karaj, a satellite city of Tehran, found Karami guilty of illegally organizing gatherings and collecting donations.
The verdict, which Karami's lawyer Ali Sharifzadeh Ardakani announced on X, contained 'flaws' and would be appealed.
Karami's son, Mohammad Mehdi Karami, was executed in January 2023 after being convicted for the killing of a paramilitary member during protests sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini.
Mashallah Karami had posted videos pleading for his son's life, but after the execution, he shared footage of the grave and mourning relatives.
He was arrested in August 2023 and remained in custody.
Human rights organizations have urged the international community to address abuses in Iran, citing instances of unfair trials and torture.
Amnesty International reported that at least eight people remain at risk of execution in Iran related to the 2022 protests.
