British prime minister updates U.S. president on allied work toward a just and lasting end to the war in Ukraine and discusses strengthening UK-U.S. ties
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer spoke by telephone with U.S. President
Donald Trump on Sunday to discuss ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at securing a just and lasting end to the war in Ukraine, Downing Street said.
The conversation followed recent rounds of talks involving U.S., Ukrainian and European officials in Florida as Washington continues to push a peace framework.
Starmer briefed Trump on the work of the so-called Coalition of the Willing, a group of allied nations supporting Ukraine and efforts to underpin any future peace agreement, and reaffirmed the need for durable hostilities termination.
The leaders also reflected on recent negotiations that brought U.S. and Russian officials together in Miami, efforts seen by both governments as integral to advancing prospects for a negotiated end to the nearly four-year conflict that began with Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. Trump and Starmer agreed on the importance of aligning their countries’ diplomatic engagement and sustaining international support for Kyiv’s resilience.
In addition to Ukraine, the two leaders discussed the broader geopolitical context, including the appointment of a new British ambassador to the United States, a role intended to further deepen ties between London and Washington as they confront shared global challenges.
Downing Street’s readout made clear that Starmer and Trump exchanged festive best wishes ahead of the Christmas period, underscoring the ongoing partnership between the United Kingdom and the United States at a critical juncture for European security.
The diplomatic exchanges come amid vigorous debate over peace proposals and evolving negotiations, with allied leaders urging robust security guarantees and mechanisms to prevent a return to large-scale hostilities as part of any eventual agreement.
Starmer’s engagement with Trump reflects London’s broader strategy to work with key partners in support of a sustainable and just peace for Ukraine.
