Former Wales Rugby Star Jamie Roberts to Pursue Medical Career
Jamie Roberts, a former Wales rugby international, is set to become a junior doctor in the NHS after completing his medical training
Jamie Roberts, a 38-year-old former Wales rugby international, has announced that he will be joining the NHS as a junior doctor.
After graduating from Cardiff University's school of medicine in 2013, Roberts spent over a decade focused on his rugby career, playing for several clubs including Racing Metro, Harlequins, Bath, Dragons, and Waratahs.
During this time, he also completed postgraduate degrees at Loughborough University and Cambridge University.
In November 2023, Roberts passed a 'return to medicine' exam, allowing him to resume his medical training.
He will begin two years of foundation training in hospitals in south Wales.
Roberts has expressed his excitement about starting his medical career, stating that he is 'ready' and 'excited' to work in the NHS.
He follows in the footsteps of several other Wales internationals who have pursued careers in medicine.
Roberts' rugby career spanned over 12 years, during which he won 94 caps for Wales and was named the British and Irish Lions' Player of the Series in 2009. He retired from rugby in 2022 and became a father in 2021. Roberts has stated that he is interested in specializing in sports medicine or orthopaedics, having experienced several injuries throughout his rugby career, including reconstructive surgery on multiple joints and a fractured skull.
