Farmers Protest Over Inheritance Tax Changes at Welsh Labour Conference
Prime Minister Keir Starmer Defends Budget Amidst Rural Unrest
During the Welsh Labour conference in Llandudno, Prime Minister Keir Starmer declared that he would staunchly defend the recent budget, sparking opposition from protesting farmers.
The demonstration, organized by the group Digon yw Digon, featured a convoy of tractors, as farmers expressed dissatisfaction with the inheritance tax changes announced by Chancellor Rachel Reeves last month.
Gareth Wyn Jones, a local farmer and YouTuber, criticized the government for exacerbating an industry already 'on its knees,' asserting that increased costs would make nutritious British food less accessible to the poor.
Meanwhile, Starmer highlighted a £160 million investment zone planned for Wrexham and Flintshire in 2025, marking coordinated efforts by Labour governments in Wales and Westminster.
The Welsh first minister, Eluned Morgan, who championed the Labour collaboration, announced additional funds to address NHS waiting lists and celebrated a record £21 billion budget allocation for Wales.
