Germany, France and UK Confirm Full Support for Ukraine in US-Backed Security Plan
Berlin, Paris and London pledge to bolster Ukraine’s sovereignty alongside US-led peace and security efforts in a call with President Zelenskiy
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer held a joint telephone discussion with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Friday, reaffirming their nations’ commitment to Ukraine’s defence of its sovereignty amid ongoing conflict.
The three European leaders, speaking on behalf of their countries, affirmed that Ukrainian forces must remain capable of safeguarding the nation’s territorial integrity and pledged ‘‘full and continued support’’ for Kyiv’s pursuit of a lasting and just peace.
In the call, the quartet also welcomed the United States’ efforts to end the war in Ukraine and commended Washington’s readiness to provide robust security guarantees for Kyiv.
The German government described the discussion as coordinated among trusted partners, aimed at delivering timely and concrete results in the realm of Ukraine’s defence and reconstruction.
This high-level coordination comes at a moment when the United States has advanced a draft plan for Ukraine’s security architecture and peace settlement, and when European capitals are seeking deeper alignment with Washington while maintaining their own strategic autonomy.
By reaffirming their backing, the three European states send a strong signal to both Ukraine and Russia that the Western alliance remains united in challenging circumstances.
For Ukraine, the support from Germany, France and the UK complements extensive military, economic and humanitarian aid already provided by these countries and other allies.
The emphasis on security guarantees is particularly significant given Kyiv’s concerns about the durability of any peace deal and the risk of renewed aggression if guarantees are not firmly anchored.
The call also underscores the shifting European security landscape, in which nations such as the UK and France increasingly assume leadership roles in coordinating defence and diplomacy alongside the United States.
Germany’s participation signals Berlin’s ongoing commitment to Ukraine despite domestic and regional debates over military engagement.
As Ukraine continues to contend with Russia’s military pressure and reconstruction challenges, the reaffirmed trilateral support from Germany, France and the UK reinforces the nation’s strategic position and reassures allies of Western cohesion.
The next phase of coordination is likely to focus on rolling out the concrete security guarantees and integrating Ukraine’s defence posture within broader trans-Atlantic and European frameworks.
