Inquiry into Freemason Connections and Legal Decisions
A public inquiry has revealed that Judge Simon Medland KC denied providing legal advice to hospital executives about nurse Lucy Letby due to any Freemason affiliation.
The Thirlwall inquiry, investigating the Letby case, highlighted that both Judge Medland and Stephen Cross, the Countess of Chester Hospital’s former director of corporate and legal services, are Freemasons.
In April 2017, Cross, a former Cheshire police officer, consulted Medland, a then-criminal barrister, on behalf of the hospital regarding suspicions against Letby.
Despite warnings from paediatricians, police were not notified until suggested by Medland in April 2017 to contact Detective Chief Superintendent Nigel Wenham.
Wenham later advised the hospital to formally involve the police.
Letby, who worked in the neonatal unit, was convicted for the murder of seven infants and attempted murder of seven others.
The inquiry has heard concerns of masonic influence, but Judge Medland insisted his association with Cross was not personal and bore no masonic context.
The inquiry continues in Liverpool and aims to release findings by late 2025.
