New Voter ID Requirement Warned to Decrease Turnout in Welsh Police Elections
Listen
In Wales, photo ID will be required for the first time in elections for police and crime commissioners next month.
The UK government argues that this will help prevent electoral fraud.
However, the Electoral Reform Society warns that it is unnecessary and could decrease turnout.
Voter ID was introduced in England for last year's local elections and will also be used in the next UK general election.
Northern Ireland has required photo ID for elections since 2003 due to perceived widespread electoral fraud.
On May 2, 2023, four Police and Crime Commissioners (PCCs) will be elected in Wales.
One PCC will be chosen for each police force area - South Wales, Gwent, Dyfed-Powys, and North Wales.
Their role includes overseeing local police forces, holding them accountable, and setting the annual budget for their respective force areas.
They can appoint and dismiss chief constables but do not make day-to-day operational decisions.
This is the fourth time these elections have been held, and for the first time, voters will need to provide identification to prove their identity.
The main political parties in Wales have put forward candidates for these elections.
The Conservative UK government is implementing voter ID requirements for Police and Crime Commissioner elections in much of England.
The government claims this is to prevent impersonation at polling stations.
However, the Electoral Reform Society (ERS) argues that the change is unnecessary as past elections have functioned effectively without voter ID.
The ERS also expresses concern that the new system could be an attempt to make voting more difficult for certain citizens.
