Protesters Disrupt AfD Congress Amid Rising Support for Far-Right Policies

Thousands rally against the Alternative for Germany as the party endorses a controversial manifesto
In an evocative display of civil unrest, protesters chanting 'no to Nazis' effectively blockaded access to the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party congress over the weekend.

The congregation of activists aimed to voice their dissent against the party's controversial policies and its increasing foothold in the German political landscape.

The protesters' ire was particularly directed at the AfD's campaign manifesto, which was poised for final approval by the delegates at the congress.

The draft of the manifesto promises to enforce stricter immigration policies and calls for Germany to exit the euro currency.

Such positions align with the party's far-right ideological stance, further fuelling public opposition.

Despite widespread criticism, the AfD is gaining significant traction among the electorate, currently polling in second place with around 20 percent of voter support.

This surge can, in part, be attributed to high-profile endorsements, most notably from tech mogul Elon Musk.

The billionaire publicly backed AfD's co-leader Alice Weidel during a live chat on X—formerly Twitter—asserting that supporting the far-right faction is the only viable strategy to 'save Germany.'

While Weidel is likely to secure her party’s nomination for the general elections, her prospects of becoming chancellor or being part of the next German government remain minimal.

Friedrich Merz of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), presently leading the polls, is the frontrunner to replace the incumbent center-left chancellor, Olaf Scholz.

Merz, representing the center-right stance, has categorically ruled out any form of coalition or cooperation with the AfD.

This sentiment echoes throughout the spectrum of Germany's mainstream political parties, all of which are anticipated to win seats in the Bundestag and have collectively dismissed any alliances with the AfD.

The unfolding scenario highlights the struggle within Germany's political system as it confronts the rise of far-right ideologies.

The AfD's growing influence and provocative policies are not only shaping domestic discourse but are also drawing global attention to the challenges of balancing national identity within the broader European framework.
