UN Confirms US Withdrawal from Paris Climate Agreement
United States submits formal notification; withdrawal effective January 27, 2026
The United Nations has confirmed receipt of the United States' formal notification to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement.
According to UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, the notification was submitted on January 27, 2025, and per Article 28, paragraph two, of the agreement, the withdrawal will take effect on January 27, 2026. This action aligns with President Donald Trump's executive order titled 'Putting America First In International Environmental Agreements,' signed on January 20, 2025, which directed the U.S. Ambassador to the UN to submit the withdrawal notification immediately.
The Paris Agreement, established in 2015, aims to limit global temperature increases to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.
The U.S. had previously withdrawn from the agreement during President Trump's first term but rejoined under President Joe Biden in 2021. The recent withdrawal has raised concerns among environmental advocates about its potential impact on global climate efforts.
