U.S. President Donald Trump indicates his willingness to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss resolving the Ukraine conflict and explore nuclear arms reduction.
On Thursday, U.S. President
Donald Trump announced his readiness to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin "immediately" to negotiate an end to the conflict in Ukraine.
During a video address at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Trump highlighted the urgent need to stop the war, calling the loss of life "carnage" and a tragic waste.
He reaffirmed his willingness to meet Putin and secure a peace deal, expressing concern over the human cost of the conflict.
Trump also noted that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had shown readiness to negotiate an end to the war.
These comments come as U.S. efforts to mediate a peace agreement are reportedly in progress, though no further information was provided.
The war, which started in February 2022 after Russia invaded Ukraine, has raised widespread international concern.
Furthermore, Trump expressed his intention to pursue nuclear arms reduction, mentioning the potential for cooperation with Russia and China on the matter.
He indicated that Russia, under Putin's leadership, had shown interest in reducing nuclear weapons and expressed hope for global denuclearization support.
Trump's remarks also follow his recent warning to Russia about imposing sanctions and tariffs if a peace agreement is not reached.
Meanwhile, Russian President Putin has continued to modernize his nuclear arsenal and rejected talks on extending the New START treaty, which limits U.S. and Russian nuclear stockpiles.
The treaty is set to expire in February 2026, although U.S. officials have confirmed that Russia remains within the agreed limits despite suspending the pact in 2023.
