U.S. President Donald Trump heightens frictions with the European Union, indicating possible tariffs amid trade imbalances.
U.S. President
Donald Trump has warned of potential tariffs on European Union goods, labeling the bloc's trade practices as 'an atrocity.' In remarks made on Sunday, Trump highlighted a trade deficit exceeding $300 billion, although official figures indicate that the U.S. goods trade deficit with the EU in 2023 was roughly €155.8 billion, balanced by a €104 billion surplus in services.
Trump's comments, which also criticized the U.K.'s trade policies, underscore escalating tensions in global trade relations.
The U.S. president, who had recently placed tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China, has faced global criticism.
A spokesperson from the European Commission cautioned that the EU would react decisively if tariffs were unjustly imposed on its goods.
