Streeting Cautions Britons on Low-Cost Overseas Procedures
Wes Streeting, UK health secretary, has warned Britons against choosing cosmetic surgery abroad at extremely low prices due to potential harm from substandard care.
After several deaths, including that of Hayley Dowell, 38, who died last year post-surgery in Turkey, Streeting advised caution against seemingly affordable offers.
He plans to collaborate with international organizations to enhance care quality in medical tourism.
NHS England's Prof Sir Stephen Powis highlighted the strain on NHS resources caused by botched foreign surgeries, emphasizing the high death rate associated with procedures like the Brazilian butt lift (BBL).
UK officials met with Turkish counterparts following Melissa Kerr's 2019 death in Istanbul during a BBL.
The British Association of Aesthetic and Plastic Surgeons reports Turkey as the top destination for Britons seeking cosmetic surgery, followed by the Dominican Republic and Brazil.
In response, the Royal College of Surgeons of England is convening a meeting to address patient safety and to potentially make the cosmetic surgery board certification scheme mandatory.
