Premier and Finance Minister Hon. Andrew Fahie has called out the main opposition National Democratic Party (NDP) for attempting to school the government how to otherwise spend $1M which is being used to pay political advisors.
“I have never seen more posters come out on the different ways you could spend a million dollar. I wonder if they know if they keep adding up the million dollar it [will] finish,” he said recently.
Last month, Opposition Leader Hon. Marlon Penn posted a flyer on the many ways government can spend $1M.
“Yet we're pushing ahead and hiring political advisers for one million dollars ($1,000,000) and suing the Attorney General on the backs of tax payers? In case you missed them, see Parts 1 & 2 of better ways to spend your tax dollars. Keep adding your suggestions and keep it going,” Hon. Penn stated.
He said, “they're hoping that your memory is short; stay woke BVI. Don't be distracted!”
However, this did not sit well with the Finance Minister.
“But I have never seen a poster come out asking us how we could spend $7.2M for the plane [BVI Airways]; I have never seen a poster come out to ask how we would have spent the $50M that we were being sued for initially with the plane; I have never seen a poster come out with the over $5M we had spent in legal fees to make sure we did not end up having to pay the same plane $50M; if you add it up, that’s $62.2M,” Premier
Fahie stressed.
The finance minister said his government continues to be accountable on these matters.
“These are being accounted for while we cutting to save jobs. We still have to put monies for those ill-advised decisions back then, but you wouldn’t hear anyone speaking about that,” he said.
He also stated that in the recent adjusted budget passed in the House of Assembly, provisions were made to pay legal fees in relation to previous court cases.
After taking office, Premier
Fahie had indicated that one of the reasons many persons are struggling financially, is due to government's legal obligation to pay out over $30M in bills left over by the NDP administration.
