Australian Man Kidnapped Over Suspected Visa Marriage

Brother-in-law among four charged in kidnapping case linked to alleged marriage fraud
In a case presented at Parramatta District Court in New South Wales on November 28, 2023, four men from Melbourne kidnapped Younis in Guildford, Australia, suspecting him of marrying for a visa.

The suspects, Kodar Faytrouni, Safwan Hussein, Ali Hamad, and Abud Elkerdi, believed that Younis wed Faytrouni's sister solely to obtain an Australian visa.

A video captured the January 11 incident, showing the men forcibly restraining Younis in a car and later assaulting him.

Police intervention eventually ended the kidnapping.

The defendants pleaded guilty, and Faytrouni's lawyer cited his client's low intellectual capacity as a factor in the crime.

However, Judge Stephen Hanley condemned the act as misogynistic and deliberate, criticizing Faytrouni's refusal to accept his sister's autonomy in choosing a partner.

Crown prosecutor Adam Muddle noted Faytrouni's misguided belief in 'protecting' his sister.

Court proceedings for Faytrouni and Elkerdi were delayed until December 20 due to Elkerdi's medical emergency, while Hamad and Hussein will return to court on December 13.
