British Activist Umer Khalid Ends Hunger and Thirst Strike in UK Prison After Medical Emergency
Pro-Palestine activist held on remand at Wormwood Scrubs stops protest after intensive care treatment and returns to custody
Umer Khalid, a twenty-two-year-old British pro-Palestine activist, has ended a hunger and thirst strike while held on pre-trial remand at Wormwood Scrubs Prison in west London after his health deteriorated rapidly and he was admitted to intensive care.
Khalid, who has limb-girdle muscular dystrophy, refused food for seventeen days and fluids for two before ending the protest on Monday and returning to prison custody.
Medical staff raised concerns that Khalid faced a high risk of cardiac arrest after developing a dangerously slow heart rate.
He was transferred to hospital for treatment and later discharged back to prison.
Physicians familiar with the case said prolonged starvation and dehydration can result in delayed and potentially irreversible health complications, including risks associated with refeeding.
Khalid was the final participant in a coordinated hunger strike involving eight remand prisoners associated with Palestine Action, which began in November.
Other participants ended their strikes earlier in January.
Supporters have described the action as one of the largest coordinated hunger strikes by remand prisoners in the United Kingdom in decades.
Khalid is among five activists accused of breaking into Royal Air Force Brize Norton in Oxfordshire in June and causing damage to military aircraft.
The defendants deny the charges.
The case is scheduled to go to trial in January two thousand twenty-seven.
By that date, Khalid will have spent approximately eighteen months in custody, exceeding the standard six-month guideline for pre-trial detention.
In recent days, demonstrations have taken place outside Wormwood Scrubs Prison in support of Khalid and other detainees.
Police reported that eighty-six people were arrested during one protest after allegedly blocking access to the prison and entering restricted areas.
Prison authorities stated that security was maintained throughout the incident.
