Prime Minister Justin Trudeau promises a balanced response if President Donald Trump moves forward with proposed tariffs on Canada and Mexico.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has warned that Canada is prepared to respond with a 'forceful but reasonable' approach if U.S. President
Donald Trump follows through with his threat to impose 25% tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, Trudeau stated that Canada is ready for an immediate response if the U.S. imposes the tariffs, which Trump has repeatedly mentioned could take effect as early as Saturday.
Trudeau emphasized that such tariffs would not only harm Canada but also impact the U.S. economy and undermine the collective security of both nations.
He pointed to Canada's strong trade relationship with the U.S., which includes critical sectors such as steel, aluminum, clean energy, and vital minerals, and its stable democratic institutions.
Trump, in turn, has maintained that the tariffs are necessary due to trade deficits with both Canada and Mexico, asserting that they would be imposed to address these economic imbalances.
Trudeau reiterated that Canada would continue to argue for the removal of tariffs, keeping all options on the table should the measures be implemented.
