German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier used today’s historic state visit to the United Kingdom to urge a fresh chapter in British-German and UK-European relations, invoking the lyrics of the British rock band Oasis: “Don’t look back in anger.” As part of the first German presidential state visit to London in 27 years, Steinmeier addressed UK lawmakers and business leaders, calling on both sides to leave behind the uncertainties of Brexit and embrace a future defined by shared interests and pragmatism.

He stressed that while Brexit changed the formal relationship between Britain and the European Union, it should not define their ongoing cooperation.

Steinmeier argued that stronger economic and security ties would lower costs for consumers, facilitate exports, and reinforce stability amid a shifting global environment.

The visit included formal meetings with Prime Minister Keir Starmer and symbolic gestures such as a carriage procession at Windsor Castle and a laying of flowers at Queen Elizabeth’s tomb.

His remarks follow the July signing of the Kensington Treaty — a bilateral agreement between the UK and Germany intended to deepen cooperation in trade, defence, migration, and education in a post-Brexit era.

German-UK business groups welcomed Steinmeier’s call for a reset, noting renewed investor interest and the potential for eased trade friction.

For many, his message symbolises a turning point, as two nations once deeply divided by European politics now signal intent to rebuild trust, collaboration and shared purpose.
