Kentucky Locks In Will Stein With Five-Year, $28.5 Million Contract
New head coach receives rising annual salary and major performance bonuses as the university invests heavily in its football future
The University of Kentucky has finalised a five-year agreement guaranteeing at least $28.5 million for newly appointed head football coach Will Stein, underscoring the school’s determination to strengthen the long-term trajectory of its programme.
The contract begins with a $5.5 million base salary for the 2026 season, increasing by $100,000 annually, and includes the option to extend the deal by as many as five additional years if the Wildcats reach the College Football Playoff.
The package integrates up to $2.1 million in performance bonuses tied to wins, bowl participation, playoff advancements, and academic achievements.
It also allocates competitive compensation for assistant coaches and support staff, reflecting Kentucky’s broader strategy to reinforce stability and attract high-level talent.
If Stein is dismissed without cause, he is entitled to 70 percent of the remaining value of the contract; if he resigns without cause, he must repay 30 percent of what remains.
Stein, previously offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Oregon, is regarded for his innovative offensive schemes and his success in developing quarterbacks.
His return to Kentucky carries personal significance, as he has long-standing ties to the state and grew up supporting the Wildcats.
University leaders emphasise that his combination of technical skill, leadership, and cultural alignment positions him to elevate the programme in the coming years.
Former head coach Mark Stoops will receive a severance package totalling roughly $37.7 million, payable through 2031. Kentucky officials note that both the investment in Stein and the payout for Stoops represent a decisive commitment to maintaining competitiveness within the Southeastern Conference as the programme enters a new chapter.
