Rise in Vaping Among Young Adults Who Never Regularly Smoked

In England, over one million adults have started vaping despite never regularly smoking. The increase is prominent among 18 to 24-year-olds since disposable vapes became available in 2021. Experts suggest stricter regulations to prevent the appeal of vaping to young non-smokers while ensuring alternatives remain for those looking to quit traditional smoking.
In England, over one million adults have started vaping despite never regularly smoking, as per recent estimates.

This trend has surged since the introduction of disposable vapes in 2021, predominantly among young adults aged 18-24.

Some experts, like Dr. Sarah Jackson from UCL, argue that vaping could be less harmful for those who might otherwise smoke traditional cigarettes.

However, if continued by non-smokers, it poses health risks.

The study, analyzed by UCL researchers and published in Lancet Public Health, reviewed surveys of approximately 150,000 adults from 2016 to 2024.

Findings reveal a rise in vaping from 0.5% in 2020 to 3.5% by April 2024 among adults who never smoked regularly.

More women and drinkers are taking up vaping, leading to concerns about its growing appeal.

Experts like Prof. Jamie Brown suggest stricter regulations on vape product marketing and appearance.

Despite the UK government's potential ban on disposable vapes, reusable alternatives remain available.

Campaigners emphasize the need for regulatory measures to reduce vapes' allure to young non-smokers.
