Stabbing Incident in Mulhouse, France: One Fatality, President Condemns Islamist Terrorism
A stabbing incident in Mulhouse has left one person dead and several others injured, prompting authorities to treat the case as a potential terrorist act.
A knife assault in Mulhouse, located in eastern France, led to the death of one person and left two police officers seriously injured on Saturday.
President Emmanuel Macron referred to the incident as an 'Islamist terror act.' The event took place when a 37-year-old suspect, listed on the FSPRT terror prevention watchlist, attacked municipal police officers while allegedly shouting 'Allahu Akbar,' meaning 'God is great' in Arabic.
Prosecutor Nicolas Heitz confirmed that the suspect was apprehended on-site.
The investigation has been taken over by the national anti-terror prosecutors unit, known as PNAT.
Additionally, three other police officers sustained minor injuries during the attack.
The deceased was identified as a 69-year-old Portuguese national who was fatally wounded while intervening in the assault.
President Macron stated there was 'no doubt' about the incident being a terrorist act and reaffirmed the government’s determination to eliminate terrorism in France.
The FSPRT watchlist was created in 2015 to gather information on individuals to prevent terrorist radicalization, in response to earlier attacks in France, including those against the satirical publication Charlie Hebdo.
Reports indicated that one of the seriously injured police officers had a wound to the carotid artery, while the other suffered a chest injury.
In the aftermath of the attack, police established a security perimeter, and military units were dispatched to the area for further assistance, while forensic teams commenced their evidence-gathering efforts.
The suspect, of Algerian descent, had been under judicial supervision, placed under house arrest, and was subjected to an expulsion order from France.
Mulhouse Mayor Michele Lutz described the atmosphere in the city as horrific following the assault, emphasizing that while investigations continued to ascertain the attack's nature, authorities were classifying it as a terrorist incident.
During a visit to an agriculture fair, Macron extended the nation’s condolences to the victim's family and to those impacted by the attack.
Prime Minister Francois Bayrou labeled the incident as an act of fanaticism and announced a period of mourning for the victim.
