Storm Goretti Batters the UK as Snow, Ice and Gale-Force Winds Cause Widespread Disruption
Tens of thousands lose power and weather warnings cover most of Britain as the powerful winter storm sweeps across the country
Storm Goretti has lashed the United Kingdom with hurricane-strength winds, heavy snow and widespread ice, leaving tens of thousands of homes and businesses without power and prompting extensive travel disruption and community impacts.
The storm, the first major weather system of the year named by Météo-France, brought gusts approaching 100 mph at the Isles of Scilly and Cornwall, while more than fifty-seven thousand customers across southwest England, the Midlands and Wales were reported without electricity as networks were damaged by fallen trees and freezing conditions.
Snowfall has been significant in parts of Scotland, with up to 27 cm of snow recorded in Sutherland and heavy accumulations elsewhere as Arctic air collided with Goretti’s precipitation.
The UK Met Office has issued a suite of weather alerts covering most of the country, including rare red wind warnings in the southwest and extended yellow warnings for snow and ice across Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
These warnings reflect ongoing risk from further wintry precipitation and freezing conditions as the system moves through the weekend, with forecasters cautioning of 2 cm to 5 cm more snow at lower levels and even greater amounts on higher ground.
Travel services have been severely affected, with major flight cancellations at Heathrow, suspended rail services in affected regions and hazardous conditions on roads prompting widespread advice to avoid non-essential journeys.
Public services and local authorities have responded to the storm’s impacts, with emergency protocols activated in many areas.
Hundreds of schools in Scotland and central England have closed for safety, and flood risks are rising as melting snow combines with rainfall in some southern regions.
Downing Street confirmed that support is being extended to households without power, and utility engineers continue restoration efforts amid challenging conditions.
The severity of the event underscores the multi-hazard nature of Storm Goretti, which has compounded an already bitterly cold spell across northern Europe and contributed to significant transport and infrastructure strain throughout the UK.
