CIA Files Reveal Klaus Barbie's Role in Bolivian Drug Trade and Dictatorship Support
Declassified documents show that Nazi war criminal Klaus Barbie collaborated with the CIA while aiding cocaine cartels and military regimes in Latin America
An investigative report has revealed that Klaus Barbie, the former Gestapo chief known as the 'Butcher of Lyon,' worked closely with Bolivia’s cocaine cartels and military dictatorship in the 1970s and 1980s, with the knowledge and indirect support of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).
Barbie escaped to Latin America in 1951 under the alias Klaus Altmann and remained in Bolivia until his arrest and extradition to France in 1983. In 1987, he was convicted of crimes against humanity for his role in the deportation of thousands of French Jews and the torture and execution of members of the French Resistance.
He died of cancer in prison in 1991.
New information based on declassified CIA cables from 1974 indicates that Barbie acted as a security advisor to Roberto Suárez, one of the world’s leading drug lords.
According to Suárez's son, Barbie provided extensive knowledge in military strategy, intelligence, and internal security.
Barbie’s assistance helped transform Bolivia into a major cocaine hub.
Barbie’s success in the drug trade expanded his influence.
In 1980, Bolivian dictator Luis García Meza came to power in a coup backed by drug cartels.
Barbie is reported to have served as García Meza’s chief intelligence advisor, contributing significantly to what was dubbed the 'Cocaine Coup.' He was granted the rank of lieutenant colonel in the Bolivian military and received immunity for his activities.
According to reports, Barbie led efforts to form death squads and operated a private intelligence unit composed of operatives from Italy and Argentina.
His base in Santa Cruz was designed in the shape of a swastika and adorned with Nazi flags.
