World Leaders Respond to German Election Outcomes

Conservative Triumph and Far-Right Ascendancy Trigger Global Reactions
Germany's recent national election has concluded with a triumph for the conservative CDU/CSU alliance, under the leadership of Friedrich Merz, who is expected to assume the role of the next chancellor.

The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) achieved its best result since World War II, finishing in second place.

The Social Democratic Party (SPD) faced a considerable defeat, recording its poorest performance in the postwar period.

This election took place earlier than anticipated due to the disintegration of the previous coalition government.

International leaders have reacted to the election results:

- United States: President Donald Trump shared his views on Truth Social, indicating that the German people had become disillusioned with longstanding policies, particularly regarding energy and immigration.

- Israel: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu congratulated Friedrich Merz and the CDU/CSU, expressing his enthusiasm for working closely with the incoming German government to strengthen bilateral ties.

- NATO: Secretary General Mark Rutte congratulated Merz on his election win, highlighting the significance of European defense expenditures and suggesting that Merz’s leadership would be crucial in this area.

- Austria: Herbert Kickl, head of the Freedom Party, commented on the election results, indicating a departure from traditional policies and expressing hope for change that mirrors public opinion.

- Greece: Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis characterized the outcome as a decisive victory for their political family, Germany, and Europe, and expressed confidence in Merz's impending chancellorship.

- Czech Republic: Prime Minister Petr Fiala congratulated Merz and the CDU/CSU, expressing a wish to enhance Czech-German cooperation and collaborate towards a more robust Europe.

- Italy: Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini pointed out the AfD's substantial gains, interpreting it as a demand for alterations in immigration, environmental, and European governance policies.

The election results have elicited diverse reactions from world leaders, highlighting potential ramifications for international relations and policy directions.
