Canada has announced its intention to adhere to the International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
In a statement, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reaffirmed the country's commitment to international law, saying Canada would comply with the ICC rulings.
The ICC issued warrants for Netanyahu and former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on charges of 'crimes against humanity' related to the Israel-Hamas conflict, which began after a Hamas attack on October 7, 2023.
The warrants followed a similar statement from the United Kingdom.
A spokesperson for UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer indicated that the UK would uphold its legal international commitments, though specifics on Netanyahu's potential arrest were not discussed.
The UK and Canada, both members of the Five Eyes intelligence alliance alongside the US, Australia, and New Zealand, are joined by several countries including Belgium, France, and others in supporting the ICC's actions.
Meanwhile, US President
Joe Biden criticized the ICC's move as 'outrageous,' emphasizing unwavering support for Israel.
Contrarily, US Senator Bernie Sanders voiced support for the ICC's decisions, stressing the importance of upholding international law to prevent further conflict.
Countries like Argentina, Austria, and Hungary expressed disagreement with the ICC's decisions.
