Concerns have been raised about the lack of police personnel in the Second District of the Virgin Islands, following an increase in serious crimes in the area.
Melvin ‘Mitch’ Turnbull, the Representative for the district, brought up the issue in the House of Assembly, stating that the police station in Cane Garden Bay operates only from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm every day.
After these hours, residents are advised to call the West End Police Station.
Turnbull expressed that this limited operating hours are not beneficial for the residents, especially considering that his district has communities that are frequently visited by tourists.
He also pointed out that the police station has been operating from a philosophical standpoint, with Commissioners making decisions about policing that do not align with the needs of the community.
The Representative also highlighted the recent spike in burglaries and near-death threats in the district, adding that the people deserve to feel safe.
He emphasized that
the Virgin Islands needs to ensure that the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) receives the necessary resources to carry out effective policing.
The issue of inadequate policing services has been a persistent problem in
the Virgin Islands, with the RVIPF facing staffing challenges like many other public bodies.
The cry for greater security presence in communities has grown louder with a visible increase in the number of crimes reported throughout
the Virgin Islands.
It is clear that the people of the Second District and
the Virgin Islands at large deserve proper policing services to ensure their safety and security.
The government and other relevant authorities must work together to address the staffing challenges facing the RVIPF and provide the necessary resources to enable them to carry out effective policing in all communities.
