Running to succeed Rishi Sunak, who resigned after a general election defeat, Patel finished last with 14 votes.
Robert Jenricks led with 28 votes, followed by Kemi Badenoch (22), James Cleverly (21), Tom Tugendhat (17), and Mel Stride (16).
The next round of voting will occur next Tuesday, reducing candidates to four before the party's annual conference at the end of September.
Additional rounds will follow the conference, concluding with the leader announced on November 2.
