Storm Gerrit: Stalybridge Tornado Described as a Whirlwind of Chaos
Storm Gerrit brought a tornado to Stalybridge, causing significant damage to about 100 homes by ripping off roofs and knocking over walls.
The event was so chaotic that local resident Kerry Hogan likened it to a whirlwind of madness, and Greater Manchester Police issued a major incident alert. Despite extensive damage, no injuries were reported.
Power outages affected thousands in Wales and Scotland due to the storm, with lightning strikes and blizzards cutting electricity to many. After the storm, the Met Office indicated that the rare "supercell" thunderstorm likely produced the tornado in Stalybridge.
Residents recounted the terrifying moments as trees fell and property was destroyed. In Millbrook, the incident was notably severe, with one resident, Maisie Pilkington, experiencing a tree crashing into her home.
UK-wide, Storm Gerrit caused travel disruptions, power cuts, and property damage. Relief efforts included emergency crew responses and a temporary rest center in Dukinfield Town Hall. Tameside officials continued cleanup after the storm, and the Met Office warned of additional unsettled weather to follow.
