President Trump's latest initiative seeks to pinpoint major financial inefficiencies in federal agencies, with Elon Musk leading the charge.
In a recent interview with Fox News, former President
Donald Trump revealed that he has given
Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX and
Tesla, the task of uncovering "hundreds of billions of dollars of fraud" within U.S. federal agencies.
Trump reiterated his dedication to tackling waste and fraud, framing his comments as reflective of a public demand for governmental reform.
"We're going to find billions, hundreds of billions of dollars of fraud and abuse. And, you know, the people elected me on that," Trump declared.
Musk is set to guide the Department of Government Efficiency, focusing on streamlining processes and pinpointing inefficiencies across various government sectors.
His initial order involves undertaking an audit of the Pentagon, which operates with an annual budget approaching $1 trillion.
Recently, the Pentagon's budget was enhanced when former President
Joe Biden endorsed a defense spending bill totaling $895 billion for the fiscal year ending September 30.
Musk's appointment has sparked controversy, particularly among critics who question the legality of his involvement and the potential hazards of revealing classified information.
In spite of these concerns, Trump affirmed his goal to reduce the federal workforce, with Musk's team seeking access to sensitive data within different governmental computer systems.
National Security Adviser Mike Waltz has specifically highlighted the U.S. Navy’s shipbuilding initiatives as a key area for reform, characterizing the current situation as "an absolute mess" and stressing the need for substantial improvements to boost efficiency and lower costs.
Under Trump's orders, Musk has begun the process of shutting down the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), leading to thousands of job cuts.
Next, he plans to focus on the Department of Education, where similar actions are expected.
Trump stated, "Then I'm going to go to the military."
Musk has significant contracts with the federal government, as pointed out by House Democrat Mark Pocan.
However, Trump clarified that Musk would not benefit financially from his role in the Department of Government Efficiency.
